The importance of speed
To improve productivity and flexibility in a post production or broadcast environment it is crucial to work with the higest bandwidth possible when doing ingest and or playback of multiple streams of video, film and audio and or when doing transfers of large media files.
Companies who can afford this therefore purchase expensive traditional SAN storage solutions based on Fibrechannel. But this solution often is expensive, complex and requires highly skilled personnel to keep it going.
Seeking the easiest solution
For companies it is then tempting to look at a NAS based solution. A NAS based solution has indeed the advantage of simplicity because it just uses standard Ethernet. A big disadvantage however given a particular configuration is the low data transport speed which often in film, video and audio results in spending a lot of money for disappointing results.
The best of both worlds: simple and fast
Ardis Technologies, with their AVFS/iSCSI system as an essential part of the DynamicDrivePool filled the gap by providing SAN speed with NAS functionality with a data rate equivalent to 4 uncompressed SDI streams over one GbE connection. This is approximately 3x higher then any NAS based solution.
